Grayling page 0732 Transcription:

In the first panel, Fern looks resigned, raising his cigarette back up to his lips. He says, "If you've been doing it this long, you must know what you're doing."

In the second panel, Lem leans back and stretches his arms above his head. Lem says, "I know that if I hadn't done it, I would have been driven mad by now. I've had to reset my Tower self I don't know how many times."

In the third panel, Fern looks taken aback, his eyes and his mouth wide open. Lem continues, saying, "The Lem you knew became compost in my yard." Fern exclaims, "What?! You kill them?"

In the fourth panel, we see a slew of Lem face portraits staggered sideways, showing a long lineage of Lem clones. Lem speaks from off panel, "Yeah. The Tower Lem has to be replaced regularly. You should have some idea what stress does to a body. I get really worn out. When it's time, relevant memories become part of me, but the allostatic load dies with that body. I can't WORK and also survive my family's abuse. Not without spare lives."

In the fifth panel, Fern looks really sad and tired. He says, "Lem...That's...That's really fucked up."

In the sixth and last panel, Lem looks blandly at the floor without much reaction. He says, "You gotta do what you gotta do."
