In the first panel, Fern looks to his right, clearly thinking hard with a furrowed brow. He says, "That's..." trailing off.

In the second panel, he mutters to himself, "How do I even say this? Ugh," looking frustrated and conflicted.

In the third panel, Lem is smoking a cigarette and listening as Fern haltingly goes on speaking. Fern says, "I guess I assume that the worst is always going to happen, because it usually does, so I have to be ready! I can't afford to be optimistic."

In the fourth panel, we see an illustration of what Fern is describing - a crowd of generic people pushing Fern towards a smug and ominous Cal. Fern continues speaking from off panel, "The worst thing right now would be if I was FORCED to go back to Cal."

In the fifth panel, we have a closeup of Fern's face, his desperation and fear writ large, sweat dripping down his face and his eyes wide and staring. He says, "And because there's never been an alternative to the worst possible outcome, I haven't thought about anything besides that."

In the sixth panel, Fern looks down to the left, staring into space as he continues letting his thoughts form. He says, "So even though it's not something I want to do, it's something I feel like I'm being compelled to do anyway, because the alternative is ..."

In the last and seventh panel, Lem holds his cigarette in his right hand, cutting in as Fern's speech peters out. Lem says, "The alternative is to make your own choices."
