Grayling page 0830 Transcription

In the first panel, May gets down to business, starting to walk off with Cal in front of her like a teacher bringing a student to the principal's office, Cal still smiling and sinister. In the background, Lem just stands there with his face downcast. May says to Rae in the foreground, "I'll take care of Cal. Don't take your eyes off him, ok?" Rae responds, "G-got it."

In the second panel, we see Lem and Rae descending the stairs. Lem's face is drawn, reddened, and miserable.

In the third panel, they have reached the lower floor of the house, and Lem starts opening a door, muttering "I gotta use the bathroom." Rae, flustered, says, "Ah - Lem -" but this apparently does not stop Lem, because in the next (fourth) panel Lem is washing his face in the bathroom sink. There is no light on in this room and the cold winter night casts blue shadows all over the room.

In the fifth panel, Lem dries his face with a towel, puffs of steam rising from the hot water.

In the last and sixth panel, we see Lem looking at himself in the mirror over the sink, his eyes almost shut from the swelling, his nose reddened, & wet strands of hair sticking to his face. He mumbles to himself in the mirror, his eyes unfocused. "That..........could have been worse."
