Grayling page 0841 Transcription

In the first panel, Rae and Lem are warming their hands over the fire, which is still burning brightly. Lem's hands are mittened, and Rae's hands are bare, his long gnarled fingers and claws on display. Rae asks, "If you don't mind me asking...Do you have any relationship experience?"

Lem looks discontentedly off to the side as he answers in the second panel. "Eh...I've had some weird experiences," he says. "But no, nothing going on with me."

In the third panel, we see an afterimage of Walder, the old man who Lem spoke to earlier. Lem continues, "May is a better person to ask. You know Walder back there? He's related to us by marriage."

Lem picks up his mug to drink from it in the fourth panel as Rae watches worriedly. "Generations back, one of his ancestors & May were married, & the extended family settled nearby."

There is no background in the fifth panel. Lem continues, "May has dated lots of artists & writers over the years, so the colony grew. So, you see, we can have a positive impact on the world."

Rae looks extremely maudlin in the sixth panel. "I'm ugly though," he blurts out in response to Lem's speech. "I'm not having that talk with you again," Lem mutters. "Just uh, stick to it, Rae. And don't make the obvious mistakes. Like participating in your own cult." It's uncomfortable for both of them to consider their romantic prospects, and talking about it, even with each other, is embarrassing.

In the last panel, Rae questioningly looks at Lem. "Are you talking about yourself?" he says. Lem responds with a deadpan, "Absolutely not," and explains, "I'm talking about Fola. You're lucky you don't have secondaries."
